Well, it wasn't pretty, but the Niners won 13-0. Paulson Adebo, former Stanford safety played well for the Saints.
The Niner defense stepped up brobdingnagian. The Saints had the longest streak in the NFL of not being shut out, not since the last week of the 2001 season (think of all the games with Drew Brees) and the Niners were the last team to shut them out. Niners haven't given up a point in six straight quarters.
Niner offense was not great. 221 passing yards, 96 rushing yards, 21 first downs, 67 plays, each team gave up a sack, each team had 6 penalties. One of the penalties cancelled out what would have been Garoppolo's first interception in four games. Niners owned time of possession, 34:50 to 25:10. Mitchell carried 7 times for 35 yards, but has a sprained MCL. McCaffrey was 11 carries, 32 yards. Jordan Mason looked terrific at the end of the game with 5 carries for 25 yards.
Garoppolo's rating was 94.7, his QBR was 77.5. He ranks 5th in the NFL for rating, and 18th for QBR. His record in his first 49 games as a Niner (including playoffs) is 40-19, same as Steve Young's, and better than Joe Montana's 37-22.

I guess you need to start with the Defense when it gets a shutout. Man, Fred Warner was an absolute monster for Niners against the Saints. He was everywhere. Even when beat, he was right there to nearly knock a ball away in pass coverage. The other guy who stood out was Talanoa Hufanga. Between those two, 16 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 2 passes defensed, lots of QB pressures, and they even helped create stops when they weren't getting on the stat sheet for what they did. Nick Bosa was held so many times I lost count, with I believe only one actually called. Mark Sanchez said on the broadcast that Bosa was offside on his 4th quarter 4th down sack. He wasn't. He actually had perfect timing because he was lined up a bit off the LOS when he came out of his stance, and moved across it as the ball was snapped.
It's so frustrating watching games on TV when the offense isn't productive passing the ball, because you just can't see down field to tell if receivers were open or not. Need to be in the stadium or watching All-22. I'd pay for a subscription to watch the All-22 live. That's only available now after the games are played. Anyway, it seemed Garoppolo was waiting too long to throw the ball against Saints and not throwing with anticipation. Then he missed an open CMac down the sideline.
I know he has 67% completions and a 16-4 TD-INT, but I just don't believe the Niners can win it all with Garoppolo at QB. The Niners have played one really good team and lost badly. Granted they were terrible in all phases of that game, so not all on G, but he was awful in that game. Beat the Dolphins and I will believe it possible to win a ring with G.

I'm tired of extending the NFC Championship Game appearance record. I want another Super Bowl victory outside the Bill Walsh Era of influence, and to not see this roster go to waste. Niners fans have already endured losing to the freaking Bears and Broncos this season. Time to make up for stepping on those rakes with a victory over the #2 team in the AFC.

Niners weakest unit is offensive line. Particularly the interior. And they struggled Sunday. Mason got his yards in garbage time. Overall, the inside running game was essentially stuffed.
Mitchell hurt, which would be a big loss. Hopefully not out long. CMac also had something going on with a knee. Although he came back in.
JG did not play as well as he had in last couple. But I think you attribute that to NO defense. He got hit a lot. NO got consistent pressure. He missed McCaffrey on the sideline for what should have been a big gain. Also missed that he had a walk in TD when he hit Jennings at the one.(JG was looking right, CMac had swung left). Oh dear, the Niners can't run. BS. The Saints can defend, especially with their big boys up front. With a rookie, an almost rookie and a first time starter in the middle the Niners are doing better up front than expected this season. When it mattered they push the hell out of the front. Mason will have to play more since Stewart is an injury waiting to happen.

Who is Stewart? And who said Niners can’t run? Certainly not me. I said that their weakest unit is o-line, especially the interior. Which I believe is true. Absolute bummer about Jimmy G. He was playing very well, and his absence takes this team from the top group of Super Bowl contenders and puts in the “very unlikely but not impossible” tier. Purdy played well given the circumstances and clearly falls into the “absolute gamer but lacks NFL tools” category; he also missed a few reads.
We did sign Josh Johnson, but that feels like a move to get another body in the QB room; not one that really raises our ceiling.
I’m not sure what else we can do though. We ride the D and hope Purdy and our arsenal of playmakers makes enough plays to keep us in the mix. The unsigned QB market looks awful. Newton is done, and after him it looks even worse. Glennon? AJ Mccaron? Carson Strong? It is truly slim pickings.
Maybe Andrew Luck will come out of retirement. I’d at least make the call. Fitzpatrick, Brees, or Rivers might be worth a call as well. But other then Luck, I’m not sure if any of these options are better then Purdy.

I thought Brock Purdy did very well, particularly since he didn't have great protection and since he's only had mop-up duty against the Chiefs. After the game, Fred Warner said (paraphrased) that he wasn't surprised that Purdy played so well since he'd been playing against the NFL's best defense in practice for the last 13 weeks. And that is a backup's job, to mimic the opponent's offense against the 1st team defense in practice.
Purdy's passer rating was 88.8. His interception was the equivalent of a punt, coming on a deep pass on 4th down. His rating otherwise would have been 100.1.

While it is true no team has made a playoff run with the circumstances the Niners now find themselves in with Brock Purdy at QB, most rookie QBs don't get put into such situations either.It is entirely possible that a team with a dominant defense and just a "game manager" QB can win in the playoffs and even a Super Bowl. No idea what Purdy can do. Can’t see how anyone can determine that there is not “any play he can’t make that Garrapolo can.” Start with progressions, finding secondary receivers, audiblizing, reading an NFL defense. All of which will be difficult for Purdy. You thought JG was a game manager? Well, Purdy is going to be the ultimate game manager. Defense. Run. DONT TURN IT OVER. That will be the mantra. If, as I believe, his arm is below average, defenses will start to cheat and jump routes. Avoiding INT’s is crucial. Niners are going to try to be Trent Dilfers Bucs in an offensive minded era.
I’ve seen too many times someone come off the bench and look good. Then the opposition gets some film. And reality sets in. One thing - as I said it did not look to me like he has a strong arm. Not a determining factor in Shanahans offense. But expect defenses to bring the safeties up and make him prove he can throw downfield.
Defenses have keyed on CMac since he got there. More so now. Hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see them winning the division with Purdy. They have a somewhat tough schedule coming up. Made tougher by Commanders being surprisingly decent and the Rayduhs coming on.
If I’m Lynch I’m at least working out Fitzgerald and Newton if either are interested. Kaepernick has been out too long. Plus they don’t need the distraction the media circus would bring.

If the Niners were unable to move the ball with Purdy, and he turned the ball over too much, they would have lost and the idea they can't make the playoffs with him would have a lot of merit.
Given Purdy was playing in the first quarter of a game with the Niners behind, and they won the game 33-17, I'd argue Purdy already proved the Niners can get to the playoffs with him as QB.
