Stanford advances to the NCAA championship, finishing in a tie for second in the regional. The top four teams advanced -- USC, Stanford, LSU, and either Purdue or Northwestern (currently in a playoff).

Indeed I was busy - volunteering at the tournament early in the day and then following our team over the last 7 holes.
Sturdza struggled today but she was not alone. Krauter shot the same score (+7) - having two players blow up was our undoing. If Krauter shoots close to even par we finish second. And nobody was sharp on the back nine.
I saw one of the best team moments after everyone finished. Sturdza was visibly upset, Coach Walker was talking to her, and didn't appear to be making a lot of progress. Krauter then came over to them, hugged Sturdza and my guess is she told Sturdza something along the lines of "hey guess what I played like s*** today too, but we still punched our ticket to nationals, your play yesterday was part of that, and we're gonna need you there."
They are absolutely going to need Sturdza at nationals. It's a seven-day event. Practice round, 4 days of stroke play, and then 2 days of match play (with quarters & semis on the same day). Heck will not be healthy enough to play eight rounds in seven days. I'd expect to see Sturdza play two of the four stroke play rounds and probably the first round of match play (assuming they qualify).
Final results from Stanford GC:
1. U$C -15
T2. LSU & Stanford -7
T4. Northwestern & Purdue +12
Purdue won a playoff on the first hole and secured the final ticket to nationals. What a bummer for NU.
On the individual side, Zhang shot the low round of the tournament (-15) but came up one short of U$C's Amari Avery. Zhang had her chances down the stretch. She left a third shot pitch on 17 about 20 feet short and then also just missed the birdie putt. On 17 Zhang drained a 30-footer to cut Avery's lead to one, but then Avery answered with a 15-footer of her own. Zhang pushed her tee shot on 18 right and had a terrible lie but managed to get up and down for par while Avery bogeyed.
2. Zhang -8
T8. Seay -1
T12. Englemann +1
T16. Krauter +3

Playing Sturdza was not a gamble. It was a necessity. Teams are only allowed one substitute player. If Heck could not go, it had to be Sturdza. I sense that she is a momentum player. If she has a bad hole, it can take her several more to reset. Resiliency is a really important skill for golf success. Something for Sturdza to work on.
There is not much time to rest and recover. The practice round for nationals is a week from tomorrow. The tournament begins a week from Friday in Scottsdale. High temperatures forecast to be 95-100. It will be a true test of mental and physical toughness.
Win - do you have a view on Ye's season-long struggles? She finished 3rd at nationals last year, was an All American and averaged 71.36 shots a round, 3rd best in Stanford history. But this season she has barely broken par and her scoring average is 74.89. Injury? Burn out? Hangover from the 3 putt at 18 in the quarterfinal match vs. Arizona?
4 other P12 teams qualified for nationals - UCLA, USC, Arizona State and Oregon. The final field of 24 includes 9(!) teams from the SEC.

Heck was in the crowd today and I sat with her mom for a bit. She probably could have played today if she absolutely had to, but it would have been tough and I'm not sure she would have done much better than Sturdza's +7.
As for Ye, I have no clue but it's pretty clear that Coach Walker has made a conscious decision to play Sturdza instead. Last year's collapse in the QFs wasn't the only time Ye has folded under pressure. Last year at regionals she had every opportunity to beat Heck for the individual crown and also cratered on the final holes. I remember her fighting back tears.
Regardless of whether Sturdza or Ye takes that alternate slot, we still have the strongest lineup of any team. They'll make the cut for match play, and after that it can be a crap shoot. But even if were unbiased there's not another team I'd bet on.

I was out there on Wednesday with a friend. First golf tournament and first time on Stanford's golf course for both of us. It was a great day. We followed my fellow Cardboarders' excellent advice and watched Sturdza from holes 1 through 3. We watched there until Seay's group arrived and followed them until 9. Said "Hi" to Condi at 7! We switched to the final grouping at 11 and followed them the rest of the way. The course is beautiful and I printed out a course map with the rosters on the back so I had a clue about the layout and the players. I was able to follow the team and individual leader boards on my phone. Made it easy to watch and understand where the close contests were. I will definitely try to get out there again for the Stanford Invitational or tournament in the future. Thanks again for the great advice!
Cheers,

Absent that, aren't we roughly at the same level as a few other top teams (e.g., U$C, who had 3 in the top 6 in the regional and 5 in the top 30)? It doesn't appear she's near fully back yet, and she is without a long period of being able to hone her game.

Even without Heck I'll take our team, although without her it definitely narrows the gap. Zhang, Krauter, and Seay will all have to play well. Will be interesting to see new Golfstat rankings that will come out over the weekend.
Keep in mind that Heck should be able to play at least 2-3 rounds if not more.
