When I was in El Toro and Los Arcos in the early 1980s, the Eating Clubs were a fantastic and much welcome alternative to University food service. We hired the chefs who became like family members. Everyone knew and loved Mildred at Los Arcos. We had cookouts every Friday evening. Sponsored outings to San Francisco. Some of the best intramural teams on campus were organized at the Eating Clubs. Lars Ahlstrom, the Bootleg co-founder, was among the many people I met and friends I made there.
Some of my favorite Stanford memories were around the Eating Clubs. I was (and still am) upset that the University ignored 100 years of history when they unceremoniously bulldozed the clubs. Yes, the buildings needed a lot of work (or complete reconstruction). The alumni would have helped. The University never asked. But this action turned out to be a step in the University's plan to purge the campus of self-operating food services. A few years later, they took away the Suites' self-operated Eating Clubs (after 30 years of operation) and gave the concession to the brother-in-law of the guy who made the decision. It was self-dealing and really smelly. The Daily wrote several investigative articles on it.
