To be honest, Mick, I don’t pay much attention to spring numbers.  Especially early.  Last couple weeks may be important numbers wise for those seeking the last couple spots. Otherwise, stay healthy and get ready. Although I do hope Villar comes around here soon. Don’t want it getting in his head.

If you aren't a subscriber, the basic gist is that Slater is extremely valuable because (a) he plays all outfield positions, (b) he has one of the strongest outfield arms in baseball (it's true, 6th best arm in MLB from CF), © he has a .350 OPS from the right side (he's a right handed hitter), (d) he's one of only two fast players on the team (defined as 75th percentile or faster) and (e) the Giants don't have any better options.

And I'm very glad that Lex doesn't place any importance in spring training stats -- I don't either, because the Giants are 3-9, and in last place in the cactus league with a -32 run differential, 12th in runs scored (of 15) and 13th in runs allowed.

In terms of OPS Blake Sabol (1.667), Joey Bart (1.444), Brett Wisely (1.264), Stephen Piscotty (1.238), & Casey Schmitt (1.167) are crushing it. Haniger (.800) and Conforto (.930) are doing well, but each have five strikeouts. Players who won't make the roster, but are hitting the cover off the ball are Gigliotti, Matheny, Williams, Brown and Meckler.

I half agree with you. Slater can't play every day...he just can't. In the last two years, he had 306 and 325 plate appearances, which is probably the outer limit of his capability, given that in prior years he had between 106 and 225 plate appearances. 

I think he does well against RH pitching. MLB average OPS in 2022 was .311 (Giants ranked 12th at .315). Slater's OPS was .350 against RHPs and .379 against LHPs. True, he destroys lefthanders. But he gets on base very well -- albeit without much power -- against righthanders. To put it bluntly, Slater has the best on base percentage on the team, by a mile. And he's one of only two fast players on the team, as the article pointed out....although...the Giants have stolen 9 bases in 10 attempts this spring.

And I think Yaz's health is pretty important. Slater will be 30 this year, but Yaz will be 32.

The only way Slater plays vs RH is if there are injuries.  I like Slater. He is valuable.  As mentioned an aspect of his game is speed. He actually has some. Which on the Giants is a rare commodity. (Last in MLB in runners waived home from second on a single). But he can’t play everyday.  He wears down.  Injuries are always an issue.  Kapler has used him very well. He slaughters lefties. Platooning with Yaz/Conforto is what Slaters role will and should be.

Defensively he is a little “spotty” imo.  Takes bad routes at times. And, as Giant notes, makes poor decisions at times throwing.  But he does have a good arm and decent range.

Keeping healthy is job 1.  I don’t think he has got through a season without a stint on the IL.

Yes, after Pederson, for players with at least 200 ABs and are still in the organization, it drops to .322 (Estrada), .316 (Flores), .308 (Crawford).

Slater's career split vs. righties is terrible. He took a major leap last year, one that I think is lasting, particularly in a season where the league average BA is .242. He's figured the righties out, IMHO. But like you say, we'll find out this year.

Other pitchers for Team USA were Pressly (all star in 2019 and 2021), Ottavino (2.06 ERA for Mets last year), Graveman (1.77 ERA in 2021 and 3.18 ERA last year), Bednar (All Star last year) and Adam (1.56 ERA for the Rays last year). In short, they have some pitching.

Starters in the field were All Stars Betts, Goldschmidt, Trout, Schwarber, Arenado, Turner, Tucker, and McNeil. The only starter on the field who WASN'T an all-star was Realmuto, not an all star last year, but in three of the last five years.

In short, ladies and gentlemen, the Giants should have lost big. Instead, they won big. Haniger hit two doubles. Villar hit a home run. Matos hit a double. Giants struck out 10 times, but had 10 hits, and DeSclafani struck out Goldschmidt, who shreds Giants pitching. Maneaea gave up just one run in three innings, Alexander struck out all three batters in one inning. Giants allowed just four hits, three by Manaea.

We might maybe have a pretty good team here, once you play the starters.

I am not impressed with what has transpired thus far this spring.  While hoping for more, I’m down to between 77-82 wins.  They are missing a singular presence in the lineup and a Gausman or Rodon on the mound.

That’s where I’ve been all along.  Nothing to do with spring performances.  Just be healthy, make the last few choices and ramp up.  Which is what spring is about. Manaea having more life on his fastball is a good sign. They need him to be solid.

Who said anything about Slater sucking?  I certainly didn’t.  He’s a good ball player. Perfectly suited in a platoon, 300-350 PAs role. Hes not helpless  vs righthanders.  My point is, he only is going to get significant ABs vs RH’s if something bad happens to Conforto/Yaz/Haniger.

I think Conforto/Yaz/Haniger are primed for an incredible year. So we agree.

Giants played Team USA tonight. Starting pitcher was Mikolas, an all star last year. Other pitchers for Team USA were Pressly (all star in 2019 and 2021), Ottavino (2.06 ERA for Mets last year), Graveman (1.77 ERA in 2021 and 3.18 ERA last year), Bednar (All Star last year) and Adam (1.56 ERA for the Rays last year). In short, they have some pitching.

Starters in the field were All Stars Betts, Goldschmidt, Trout, Schwarber, Arenado, Turner, Tucker, and McNeil. The only starter on the field who WASN'T an all-star was Realmuto, not an all star last year, but in three of the last five years.

In short, ladies and gentlemen, the Giants should have lost big. Instead, they won big. Haniger hit two doubles. Villar hit a home run. Matos hit a double. Giants struck out 10 times, but had 10 hits, and DeSclafani struck out Goldschmidt, who shreds Giants pitching. Maneaea gave up just one run in three innings, Alexander struck out all three batters in one inning. Giants allowed just four hits, three by Manaea.

We might maybe have a pretty good team here, once you play the starters.

I wish I could share your optimistic outlook….

I am not impressed with what has transpired thus far this spring.  While hoping for more, I’m down to between 77-82 wins.  They are missing a singular presence in the lineup and a Gausman or Rodon on the mound.

That’s where I’ve been all along.  Nothing to do with spring performances.  Just be healthy, make the last few choices and ramp up.  Which is what spring is about. Manaea having more life on his fastball is a good sign. They need him to be solid. 

The lack of presence is a big problem in my eyes. Also, they have a lot of guys with injury issues.
