Guess I’m just a spoiled old geezer who remembers when the farm system produced at least one good OF every year and we didn’t have to rely on guys off the waiver wire.
Everything I’ve seen here and elsewhere about Bart suggests he’s not a keeper. Too bad, on paper he was a good draft pick.

Lex, I was being facetious. Let me spell it out for you. THE TEAM TREATED HIM AS IF HE WERE HERB WASHINGTON. Sure, he is an excellent outfielder -- and we have precious few of those -- and he can steal a base -- and we have precious few who can do that. I would far prefer that they kept Bryce Johnson, but they saw his .310 spring training batting average and said "let me get a more versatile player" for that 25th/26th slot as you pointed out.

It may be that the game had passed them by. I love Righetti, he was Eckersley about two years before Dennis Eckersley switched from starting to relieving. Obviously he knows/knew pitching. Righetti has something in common with Cain and Lincecum...all three burned out by their early 30s. Rags pitched for the Giants from ages 32-34, and had a 5-15 record with a 4.61 ERA, compared to his 3.46 career ERA. Cain retired at 32, but his string of really poor seasons started at age 28 -- he was 19-40 after age 27. Exact same for Lincecum who had his last really good year at age 27, then went 39-42 with a 4.68 ERA from age 28 on.
When Rags started, Giant team ERA was 5.13 the year before Rags started, he brought it down to 4.61 immediately, then continued to lower it to 3.37, his low-water mark in 2011. He was very effective at his job, then it started creeping back up, reaching 4.27 in 2013. It then lowered immediately to 3.79 and hovered there for a few years...when he was being told by the suits what to do? Maybe. It ballooned to 4.79 in his last year.

I still watch and like baseball. I don't care about the analytics. I like a great pitch, a great swing, a great catch, a great throw. That's all i really care about, that and the players that wear "Giants" on their shirt.

Not sure if it was the company line, but Krukow this morning commented that they brought Beatty in for one thing, to pinch hit. He also stated that while Johnson had a great spring and is certainly a big league level player, he needs more at bats and playing time. He wasn't going to get much of either at this point with the big club.
Haven't seen much baseball this spring, but it seems you give the guy a shot, especially with some guys out. He's 27 right? Not getting any younger.

He also stated that while Johnson had a great spring and is certainly a big league level player, he needs more at bats and playing time. He wasn't going to get much of either at this point with the big club.

It isn’t about Johnson v. Beatty per se, it is about the overall approach to roster building. In an interview with Baggerly last week, Zaidi indicated the focus this year was going to be “internal”, bringing up guys SF drafted rather than scouring the waiver wire for players dropped by other teams. That approach lasted until the morning of Opening Day when Johnson was sent to Sacramento in favor of Beatty.
The message that transaction sent to the players and fan base was loud and clear. Nothing has changed. The Giants have no interest in turning off the spin cycle.
Quite frankly, this is a major disappointment. If SF is going to become a player again in the NL West, they are going to have to trust their farm system to produce talent (in combination with signing premier free agents to fill the gaps). Continuing to sign rejects from other teams will only slow the process of building a team that can compete at the highest level of the game.
Yes, we will probably see Johnson this in a Giants uniform this year. However, it should have been on Opening Day.

Apropos of nothing…. 21 out of 22 base stealing attempts were successful on Opening Day (only Toronto’s Matt Chapman was unsuccessful). Does it really matter who is catching? With the new rules in place, you probably won’t stop the opposition from stealing second anyway…..

Apropos of nothing…. 21 out of 22 base stealing attempts were successful on Opening Day (only Toronto’s Matt Chapman was unsuccessful). Does it really matter who is catching? With the new rules in place, you probably won’t stop the opposition from stealing second anyway…..
I thought Joey Bart's days were numbered on the day they drafted Patrick Bailey.

Catchers are always hard to find. Plus Bailey is a switch hitter who is significantly stronger hitting from the left side. So there was/is always possibility of a platoon. Unfortunately, Bailey hasn’t developed as well as theyd like to this point. Although much of that is that he has been absolutely awful hitting right handed. To the point where I hope they just end his switch-hitting. (Interestingly, my understanding is the right side is his natural side). The Giants did that with JT Snow and it made a difference.
I don’t think the Giants have handled Bart very well. My guess is that if Sanchez shows that he’s ready he’ll take over the starting catching chores with Perez backing him up. 60-40 if you will. Bart has an option left so they can send him down. But at that point, I think his Giants career is essentially done.

Speaking of Johnson. Giants called him up today and sent down wisely. Baggerly suggests that the whole thing was done to manipulate options. I can’t say that I understand it. But at least it’s a better explanation than they needed another borderline left-handed bat.

Beaty had a “upward mobility” clause in his KC contract. This meant if another team offered him a big league job within 48 hours of the Royals notifying him that he was not going to be on their roster, KC had to let him go.
The Giants wanted him and because of this unusual clause, they had to place him on the 26 man roster for a minimum of one day. Hence the Beaty for Johnson switch. Now Beaty can be optioned out to ride the Sac-SF express. In the meantime, the Giants sent Wisely back to Sac. and activated Johnson (who never left NY). Why the Giants didn’t keep Johnson in lieu of Wisely on Opening Day is anyone’s guess…..

My general sense is that Zaidi, like a lot of brilliant, accomplished people, does not care to explain himself, his motives or his actions to the hoi polloi.
