I wish Shaw well on his next thing. I would not be surprised if he just stayed on at Stanford University (not football) in some very comfortable fundraising or outreach role. This was overdue and I now have some hope that Stanford can return to the Harbaugh / early Shaw days.

Thanks for the additions.  There are certainly other details that need to be added.  If I look at USC's rise to prominence this year, the university ticked all those boxes in grand fashion -- and in a way Stanford either cannot do or does not want to do.  No, Stanford does not want to be USC.  But replicating our years of ascendancy vs. the Trojans (2009-2018) will require a lot more creativity than we have thus far shown.

I wish I had been the one to start this thread, because the correct title — as in the email from the Athletic Dept — is “Thank you, Coach David Shaw.”

Now is a great time to reflect on the incredible accomplishments during Coach Shaw’s tenure, including becoming the winningest coach in Stanford history and delivering two Rose Bowl victories.

During an era of scandals in sports, Coach Shaw delivered extraordinary accomplishments while constantly reaching to do things the right way, making a greater impact on society as a whole, and contributing to the excellence and reputation of the university he loves.

It is no surprise to me that even his departure was done in a way that is best for the university — starting the process of a new search at an optimal time, with no drama or scandal.

When the news was announced that Stanford would be modifying its processes to accommodate the realities of the transport portal, some viewed it as a cynical ploy for Shaw to cling on, but I think it is clearer now that, until his last day, he was taking steps to make the program stronger regardless of who leads it next.

Of course I would love for an even greater era to lie ahead in Stanford’s future,  but I can’t imagine a greater run than Shaw’s — when I consider both what he accomplished and how he did things.

David Shaw must have decided to leave some time ago, given the prepared statements and the timing immediately after the last game.  In that last presser when he discussed changes to NIL and transfer, when he said the focus was on trying to send the seniors out on a win...he knew.  Even in his departure, David Shaw was attempting to do what was best for the long term future of Stanford football and his student-athletes. 

So I do say "thank you" to David Shaw--genuinely felt.  Thank you for being a principled and ethical representative of my alma mater.  Thank you for bringing our program to its most successful stretch in program history.  And thank you for departing in a classy way.

Coach Shaw's departure reminds me of Bill Walsh's decision to step down.  Both have made great contributions to Stanford, both on and off the football field for which Stanford is better for.

Because we don’t know that he was? Maybe he knew the writing was on the and truly resigned rather then be fired, even if that meant giving up a buyout. I have great memories from attending 2 Rose bowl victories and even an epic Fiesta bowl loss, which seemed impossible when I arrived at Stanford at the end of the WH era. I too felt it was time for some new blood to change the direction of the program, but appreciate all Shaw did as a Hc and great representative of the university.

I'm an optimist, so I'm going to focus on the fact that Muir has made some good hires -- Greg Meehan, Kevin Hambly, David Esquer, Jessica Allister. . . .

In his announcement, David took the time to praise the team and the players.  He said that our team has a lot of potential in its young players.  That was classy.  Most guys would have made it all about themselves and offered excuses. 

Interestingly, he also said that other teams have been illegally trying to entice our players into the transfer portal.

As usual, I am amazed that so many people on the cardboard know exactly what David Shaw was thinking and when he thought it. As far as a "buyout" goes, we may find out more about any financial arrangements on Monday, but probably we will not. It is quite possible Shaw will accept another position at the University that will pay quite well for a very long time, but not one that would requite them to disclose the salary. That could be quite acceptable to both parties. Naturally, we don't actually have a copy of his contract so we don't know what it actually would require. In theory, if he quits, he could be required to pay the University! Kind of doubt that is what is happening :-).

While I obviously don't know exactly when Shaw decided to quit, I am pretty sure he knew going into this season that things were going to be very tough. He isn't going to stand up in front of the press and say "Yes, I think we will suck this year" but he is a good enough coach to know what his team can't do. He also doesn't exist in a vacuum, despite what others on this board may believe. At the very least, he talks to his players and they surely have expressed at least "concern" about how things have been going the last couple of years. We don't really know how much direct pressure he was under to resign, but I suspect there was  some. FWIW, I am fully willing to believe it was primarily his decision and that he went into this season actively contemplating making such a move.
