To me, this was a classic "trap" game:
1) Highly emotional victory against the Dallas Cowboys, almost guaranteeing an emotional let down.
2) Cleveland had an extra week off to prepare. brobdingnagian advantage, Cleveland.
3) 49ers had to fly 2,500 miles, Cleveland home game. brobdingnagian advantage, Cleveland.
4) It was in the rain, a more natural occurrence in Cleveland than in Santa Clara. Purdy can play in the rain, BTW. Threw for 72 points against Louisiana-Lafayette in the rain. Threw for 35 points against Tampa Bay in the rain during the rain against Tom Brady. And just a guess, but I suspect Purdy threw in inclement weather at Iowa State more than once.
5) Worst of all is travel related jet lag. There have been studies that indicate that Eastern jet lag is particularly challenging on athlete bodies. I know we all remember the Texas drubbing of Stanford's football team in 1999 by a score of 69-17 during an early afternoon game...and then Texas traveled east the next year to Stanford for a night game, played at 10:15 p.m. body clock time at kickoff for the #5 rated Texas players, resulting in a 27-24 victory at Stanford -- one week after Stanford lost to San Jose State, 40-27. That's a 55 point turnaround in adjacent years, and Stanford had a better record in 1999 (8-4) versus 2000 (5-6).
The fact that the 49ers could have won on the last play was amazing to me.
