I'm no more convinced Purdy won't play vs. Bengals than I was CMac wouldn't at Vikings.
Purdy could be out of concussion protocol today, Friday, or Saturday. He also could not be out by Sunday and be unable to play, but I think given he didn't have any symptoms until well after the game, the odds are he will be out of protocol by Sunday. I do see the line dropped from -5.5 to -3.5 after the Purdy protocol news was reported. Will be interesting to see what happens if he is cleared.

Yes, yes there is. My daughter has had one. Hit in the head, minor symptoms following for only a day or so. Real doctor diagnosed, btw (if you call Kaiser doctors real). Know of teammates who were out for weeks, nausea, issues with lights and sounds, headaches, dizziness, etc etc etc.

Purdy cleared. Sunday is not a must win game. But it’s pretty damn important. 49ers have been dominated two straight games. The final score has not reflected how badly they were out played.
Cincinnati with Burrow is a dangerous team. So it should be interesting. Focus will be on Purdy. Always the QB. Personally, the line play will be the more important gauge. They’ve got the sh-t kicked out of them two weeks in a row on both sides of the ball. If that doesn’t change, I really don’t care what Purdy does. They will lose.
They missed Deebo last week. If I’m Shanahan, I play McCaffrey a little bit more in the slot or even out wide. I use him on the type of jet sweeps and bubble screens that they throw to Deebo. And ans a decoy on jet sweep action. Perhaps split him out at times. Id like to see McCaffrey get the ball more in space and run a little less up the gut. He’s a very good inside runner. But they are getting absolutely no push. And he’s been a little under utilized as a receiver so far this year.
Defensively – it’s time for the front to put up or shut up. I heard Tim Ryan before the Minnesota game talking. I happened to be driving. I don’t usually listen to pregame stuff. He mentioned they do a lot of stunts and play a lot of games up front. His comment was he’d like to see a lot less of that - cause they have the talent simply to beat their man straight up.
Wilks is on the hot seat. But perhaps some thought need to be given to why they hired him in the first place. He’s known to be a guy who runs his defense from back to front. Specializing in defensive backs. And also somebody who likes to blitz. Both Saleh and Ryans ran their defense from front to back. Relying more on the front seven. Didn’t blitz a whole lot.
Personnel wise, the 49ers are weakest in the defensive backfield. Both their safeties are relatively slow. Hufunga is excellent against the run, and he can make some plays. Ditto Gipson. But they lack speed. They don’t have a good slot defensive back. Oliver ain’t Jimmy Ward.
So it’s crucial to get pressure on the quarterback. If Burrow has time, he will slice them to ribbons.
If the Niner Defense gets whipped going into a bye week, then I think there is some possibility Wilks gets fired. Tough thing to do in the middle of the season. But this defense is badly under performing.
Any expectation for this team is super bowl or bust. If they go into the bye 5-3, they’ll find themselves and scrambling for the division. Not what they expected to be doing.

The Niners are a Rorschach test for their fans.
We are in trouble:
- 2 losses in a row, only 17 PPG after scoring 30+ for 12 straight
- Purdy being exposed
- FG kicker is proving he was a waste of a 3rd rd pick
- Wilks is ruining defense
- We could go into by 5-3 with three losses in a row - start firing people!
We are fine:
- At this time last year had a 3-4 record, then ripped off 10 straight wins
- Purdy is still the #1 most efficient passer in the NFL
- Moody hasn't missed an XP and is 11/14 FG, with no miss under 41 yards, and 2/3 50+
- Give Wilks a little more time to figure things out
- We could go into bye week 6-2, feeling really good
This is honestly the first game this season I have not been confident Niners would win. But I think this is more to do with the fact they have lost 2 in a row and not played well in those games more than it is about the team not being as good as expected.
I have no freaking idea what to believe about the Bengals game. The Niners could lay another egg. Both teams could struggle, or the Bengals could be the egg-laying team today. It's the NFL 2023 and anything can happen. Betting on these games is certifiably insane.

In 1981, the 49ers were 5-2 after seven games. Same as in 1988. Same as in 1994. Those three seasons turned out with Super Bowl victories.
No other Kyle Shanahan team has started out that well except the 2019 Super Bowl team. Shanahan's teams start out pretty slowly.
The last 49er team that started 5-2 was Harbaugh's 2013 team, the team that lost the NFC championship game in Seattle.
To your points:
1) Since the preseason, I haven't been sold on Jake Moody. Something's wrong there. He was much, much better at Michigan, which is not a forgiving environment for kickers. But his FG and XP kicks look off, they curl a lot. They're not very straight. And his kickoffs are getting returned a lot and he leads the NFL in out-of-bounds kickoffs with two. That's two too many. That's a real issue.
2) I think Steve Wilks is an issue. I don't think he understands what he has or understands the preferred defense or uses it well. I'm not convinced he's a great DB coach, either. If the 49ers don't turn it around on defense, Wilks is likeliy to be here another year, rather than using this as the stepping stone to a head coaching position.
3) I'm not too worried about Brock Purdy. 10 wins in a row wasn't a fluke. I thought he did well against Minnesota until his concussion.
4) The Browns are an excellent team, they have the best WR trio in the NFL, and Burrow's calf issues are largely behind him. I anticipate he will have a big day.
5) Outside of the sacks, Bosa is having a good season (TFL, pressures, etc.). The rest of the DL is not playing up to snuff. Once again, Drake Jackson has disappeared.
6) The Browns are five point underdogs, but they have an extra day of rest.
7) Interesting wild card: The referee is Ron Torbert. His referee crew throw a lot of flags. They are very active. The o line was always a bit of a ? coming into the season. Williams getting hurt was a very big hit. He’s their most indispensable player imo.
D line, imo, hasn’t played close to its reputation all year. They did stop the run early. But the pass rush hasn’t been there.
They didn’t tackle well today either. That’s surprising.

It seems to me Kyle Shanahan is getting outreached now, on both sides of the ball. He may not be the DC, but he's the Head Coach, and he - as he said - is ultimately responsible.
I'm tired of seeing Kyle Juszcyzk and Charlie Woerner. They are playing way too much and neither is a threat as a receiver. Jus has 6 catches in 8 games for 39 yds. Woerner has 0. It's time to play the rookie TE Brayden Willis. He might not be the blocker Werner is, but he is a much greater passing threat and just having him on the field will force defenses to defend him rather than completely ignore him as a pass threat when he's on the field. Kittle as the only pass receiving TE threat is not good enough. Also need to go with more 4 WR sets (could be Kittle plate wide) that stretch the field, and I want to see Ronnie Bell, because Danny Gray doesn't appear to be someone who is ever going to do anything.
Purdy leads the NFL in 9.1 YPA, and is the #2 rated QB. He can create big plays in the pass game. He's just not getting enough opportunities because Shanahan is putting him in too many obvious passing situations by running too much in predictable ways on early downs. They need to use him as a decoy in run game more to open up passing game until teams fail back their focus on him a bit.
The most productive the offense was agains the Bengals? When Purdy threw 3 straight play-action passes on first down. They worked because the Bengals were hell bent on stopping the run on first down. The same thing applies in short yardage. A 2nd and 1 is the perfect play-action passing down. But first drive of game, run for 9 yards. Then it's two runs for no gain because the Bengals expected it. Kyle needs to self-scout himself a lot more than he apparently is.
The Defense, I have no answers. It felt like Wilks was being clowned in the first half once again. The Burrow run up the middle with nobody in the middle of the field on defense was just embarrassing. Was like UW's defense when Daniels ran in untouched with nobody in front of him. Niners haven't forced a punt in the last two first halves.
Where was Randy Gregory yesterday? They seemed to have - now fair to call a bust - Drake Jackson playing ahead of him. The Niners are 0-3 with Gregory, BTW.

Dude, the Head Coach is responsible for everything. He says he is, but you take exception that? I didn't have anything to say about Shanahan after the first 2 losses in their streak. But the Bengals game demonstrated the same issues over three weeks. Are you here to say Kyle Shanahan isn't responsible?
The Niners have been talking about how they are Super Bowl contenders, but do you see a team that looks like one the last three weeks? The NFL talent evaluators have said they have one of the top 3-4 most talented rosters in the NFL. They are paying top dollar at several positions. This isn't Stanford, where you just want to be competitive and show progress. The San Francisco 49ers this year are suppose to be great on both sides of the ball. The last three weeks they have been terrible on both sides of the ball. I'm not calling for Shanahan's head. I called for the DC's head last week, but who else is responsible for the last 3 weeks of putrid performances than Kyle Shanahan?

I'm tired of seeing Kyle Juszcyzk and Charlie Woerner. They are playing way too much and neither is a threat as a receiver. Jus has 6 catches in 8 games for 39 yds. Woerner has 0. It's time to play the rookie TE Brayden Willis. He might not be the blocker Werner is, but he is a much greater passing threat and just having him on the field will force defenses to defend him rather than completely ignore him as a pass threat when he's on the field. Kittle as the only pass receiving TE threat is not good enough. Also need to go with more 4 WR sets (could be Kittle plate wide) that stretch the field, and I want to see Ronnie Bell, because Danny Gray doesn't appear to be someone who is ever going to do anything.
