I assume Bill couldn’t bear to watch the end of his beloved Conference of Champions. Sorry to see him go; and it could be very weird, but it was never boring.

I was very fond of Bill Walton. Granted, he was rhetorically over the top and long-winded, but he was undeniably a loving, positive, enthusiastic, empathic, and ethically sensitive human being. He always had good things to say about Stanford and completed two years at Stanford's School of Law. A while ago I saw a video about Bill visiting a court that had been named for him and that now had a study center for youth as a constituent part of it. RIP Bill Walton.

Walton had a stuttering problem growing up but overcame it, he talked about and made the following statement:
"I'm a stutterer. I never spoke to anybody. I lived most of my life by myself. But as soon as I got on the court I was fine. But in life, being so self conscious, red hair, big nose, freckles and goofy, nerdy looking face and can't talk at all. I was incredibly shy and never said a word. Then, when I was 28 I learned how to speak. It's become my greatest accomplishment of my life and everybody else's biggest nightmare.

Law school classmate. Well, technically, not a classmate, because he was in the class behind me. But I did have a class or two with him during my third year of law school, including one on the legal relationship between the United States and Mexico. Very intellectually curious. Not one who stood on his fame. I enjoyed interacting with him. Of course, there is no reason why he would have remembered any of that. But it is worth noting that he definitely added something to the law school.

I'll admit it, there was a time where I would cringe when I saw that Bill was calling a Stanford game. But over time, I came to really enjoy his games. He absolutely loved Stanford. He always had positive things to say about Stanford players and the coach, even when the team was struggling. He had interesting (though never topical) stories. Bill just seemed like a super nice guy. I'll miss seeing him call Stanford MBB games.

I had to hit mute when he called Stanford games. Despite his color commentary style, he was undoubtedly a great human being. Despite being a lifelong vegetarian, cancer ended his life.

He was at the law school during my time there. I was amazed that such a big star was not all full of himself. A nice guy and a big fan of Stanford basketball. I would usually see him at the games with Professor Heller. Not sure if they were discussing basketball, law or the rest of the world.

I can’t think about Bill Walton without hearing him say “Throw it down, big man!” Or something close to that.
Can't say that I'll miss the guy the way I miss, say, John Madden in the broadcast booth, but I will say that I have never, ever seen a guy dominate a basketball game the way he did. Won't forget his performances at Maples with Wooden's teams. A big man vs outmatched boys. Wintry nights of gloom for Cardinalmaniacs.
