Totally agree with you, fullmetal. Hawaii's D was completely gassed, and we were running it down their throats. No reason to even throw the ball on 1st down when BG threw the pick.  We were in the driver's seat, and a turnover gave them new life (although I also was worried that we would end up kicking just a FG due to a penalty or something stupid that killed the drive, and then Hawaii was going to drive against our defense for a game winning TD). 

Our last possession was even more baffling, since BG had not shown any ability to connect deep and was inaccurate all day, and they have him throw 2 long balls across the field.  The first incompletion was possibly not his fault since the receiver slipped.  The second incompletion was awful, not just because he led the receiver too far up the field where the CB was able to peel back and make the play, but because he completely whiffed on a WIDE OPEN Roush coming across the field for a much easier first down.

Lot of kids played their guts out.  91 and the QB…..QB mistakes were physical.  91 can wear this one.  It’s on hm.

Not defending it, it sucked. Think ref overreacted too, but it's NCAA so 91 was dumb there. But it would have still been 2nd down without the penalty. We have no idea what would have happened after that. 

So let's not lose focus on blaming our absolutely terrible QB play, Reich sticking with him, and the horrible play-calling on our last possession!

imo stanford had 2 players star today: micah ford and clay patterson.

patterson had 2 sacks. when's the last time stanford had a defensive tackle (not an edge rusher) with 2 sacks? how often has it happened?

he had a strip for a fumble-recovery td, so he gave us 7 extra points.

regarding the penalty:

iirc stanford lost little to no yardage on the play. the sack yardage about equaled the penalty yardage. 
hawaii then scored on a long pass. their receiver easily beat our db deep. that play would have scored from 15 yards farther out.
iirc stanford had three 15-yard penalties on that defensive series.
to my eyes, it was a bogus call - patterson was not taunting hawaii players or the crowd, turning flips, signing a football on the 50-yard line, etc. it was a modest dance. hawaii certainly celebrated their touchdowns. most of all, it was FUNNY not mocking - ie not demeaning or aggressive!

I agree completely. I've always felt that celebrations, especially dancing, should not be punished. Just let it go and quit over-officiating. And, in the case of a sack where there isn't a turnover, the play clock keeps running. If it goes on too long the celebrating team is only hurting themselves.

I agree completely. I've always felt that celebrations, especially dancing, should not be punished. Just let it go and quit over-officiating. We weren't expected to win this game. The Vegas line was Stanford +2.5.  Right on the nose.

Yes we had a chance to win. I don't blame 91. There were any number of plays that might have changed the outcome...the blocked field goal, the interception, the D stopping either of Hawaii's two long drives at the end, the D not giving up 45 yards in penalties that last drive, Reich calling running plays instead throwing on Stanford's last possession at least until there was no more than 30 seconds left on the clock, etc.

Some positives:
- first rushing touchdown in nearly two years
- first RB with a 100-yard rushing game since Micah Ford against Clemson last year
- only one delay of game penalty, which I think was intentional
- only one offensive holding penalty, which was declined and didn't change the outcome (I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought “offensive holding” every time the whistle blew.)
- a 9-minute run-first TD drive like we haven’t seen for almost a decade


I’m no Borg. I probably would have dropped my season tickets this year if Taylor were still the coach.  Yet I had fun watching a game for the first time in a few years. 

Ultimately we don't have the horses but at least the kids put up a fight.

I too am stunned by the crucifixion of this team, of Luck, of Reich, etc. after one game. Yes, it was the worst passing game I've ever seen in 50+ years of watching Stanford football, but there were some signs. Our running game was the best it's been in what, two or three years, with 185 yards by the backs. Both lines looked solid, no sacks given up and a tallied few on defense. The D line also scored. It will take time. 

Anyway, on to next week.
