I know we play nickel the majority of the snaps with 5 DBs but it seems like the last two and now this recruiting class are loaded with DBs. Do we really need another DB?

I think Ulloa is a take. He's a bit bigger than all of the other '16 commits and better suited to safety. The safeties from '14 haven't shown much yet and the safeties from '15 burned their redshirts. With a redshirt year to bulk up, he could provide great depth at safety and be the heir apparent to one of the positions a couple of years down the road.

Eek, that didn't sound good. My fear with Stanford recruiting is always the lack of fan support at games. And reading between the lines, Stanford maybe hasn't been real clear with where and how Long fits at Stanford as a football player. That seems important to him.

I think he is just being ingratiating to ND media and people asking him about ND. If Long is accepted to Stanford, he will come. ND is a backup consideration and he knows he can wait with them. I see this as something similar to Terrence Alexander whose visit to ND was also "amazing" and much later in the cycle.
If I had a dollar every time I was distracted, I wish I had some ice cream.

I think that, given how frequently we face teams with spread offenses, we need to keep having DB-heavy recruiting classes. We've seen with DL how quickly a position can be depleted with even one or two years of under-recruitment. We also don't know the coaches evaluations of the DBs who have been recruited in the past couple of years. If they are beginning to doubt that some of them will earn significant playing time, not that they have had a chance to work with them for a couple of years, it may be worth rotating more guys in. And, of course, one can never predict injuries. I think 4-5 DBs each class is about right, and while we have four right now, not all of them are safely home yet (see, David Long issues on this thread).
On a related issue, we are at 16 commits right now (pending potential admission casualties), and we have talked about maybe 20-22 total in this class. What additional positions or specific players do you all think we should target to fill out the class? Personally I would not mind seeing another LB or two, (currently only Curtis Robinson on board, is McCulloch still a possibility?) even though we seem to have great depth at the position currently; WR (Crawford and Robinson possibilities? We have only Fehoko now); can't say no to a premium athlete like Brandon Burton, even if it means yet another DB; one more RB in Speights

Fehoko is going on a mission and won't enroll until 2018. Bills, Kaufusi, or Dawson (no offer) are in the same boat. Also, there are a number of potential walk-ons who would address depth issues. Gutwald, Richardson, Riccitelli, and Shohfi. None of them count toward the scholarship limit, so I don't "count" them, even though they are important. Therefore, by my count, the class stands at 15.
I think Ulloa, Swann and Stewart are highly likely to come if admitted.
Robertson and Simms appear to have admissions issues, but both of them have called Stanford their first choice (if admitted).
Speights, Carmouche and Schaffer have official visits actually scheduled, so they fall into the next most likely category.Â
Okeke stated at one point that he would plan an official to Stanford, but he's been quiet recently.Â
McCulloch, Burton, Crawford, and Jones seem like long shots, but I think they are in play.Â
And then don't forget Stealth, Plan B, and the prospect of Jordan Fox returning to the team.
I would think the wish list includes a minimum of 2 WRs, 3 DLs, and 2 LBs. IMHO, all other needs have been met.

Can anyone remember a 5 star recruit saying Stanford is his top choice this late in the process, and then not signing with Stanford? I mean usually by now, they have stopped talking about Stanford as their #1 if they don't have the admissions profile to get in. Deante Gray was super convinced he was going to get admitted, but he wasn't a 5 star either.
In recent years, Jabrill Peppers had Stanford as his #1 until the Summer before his Senior year. Last year Iman Marshall and Rasheem Green were very high on Stanford, but didn't want to or couldn't do the academic work to get into Stanford. Stanford has signed other 5 star recruits, but can't remember any that had Stanford leading in mid-October and then went elsewhere. I know Trent Edwards and Julian Jenkins were 5 stars, but don't know if they were publicly saying Stanford was their top choice until January.
I guess what I'm saying is wouldn't Robertson have some reason to believe he has a very good chance to be admitted, if he is making clear Stanford is his #1 choice in mid-October? It is pretty clear to all concerned that if Robertson doesn't sign with Stanford it will be because he wasn't admitted. How many recruits have ever put themselves in this position?

Aziz Shittu de-committed and re-committed at least twice, likely due to his uncertainty about admissions. It worked out for him, but he put himself in a position where he probably would have to admit he didn't get admitted if he ended up at another school. Louis Young was a highly regarded player, though not a 5-star recruit, who de-committed, re-committed, and de-committed again due to admissions. That was under the Harbaugh regime though, so the messaging about academics was much less clear.
Those two are the best comparisons to Robertson that I can recall. Guys like Gray and Farrar, who strongly believed they would gain admission, seem less analogous to me because, in their minds, they weren't going out on a limb.
