Yes, it's a money making industry. But the majority of their value clearly derives from their status as college athletes, if a good NCAAW player is making 7x average WNBA salary.
Maybe the answer is to give the athletes some flat percentage of TV revenues. But the unregulated NIL market I do think will eventually kill the golden goose for the "revenue sports" as the players are more and more seen to be professional athletes/mercenaries.
