Yeah, Sherman's a good dude.  In high school he used to use his trash talking to motivate his teammates to graduate.  He still goes back to his old high school in LA and his message is about getting kids to graduate, not to go to the NFL.

I hope he comes back from his injury and is successful in SF.

Freakin' love Sherman and his mouth and his intellect that backs it up. As another poster pointed out, Sherman is a key to Stanford recruiting. I would love for talented, smart, mouthy inner-city kids to know that there's a place at Stanford for them.

How much active recruiting can those outside the program do?  Wouldn't Sherman be considered a booster?

Nice to have him wearing red and gold rather than that fluorescent green highlighter color. Watching my Niner fan wife's head explode with the news (she hated that guy) was a nice bonus.  Very interesting to read about the negotiations.  Without an agent involved, they crafted a deal that works for both parties.  Dude should think about politics or law.  Preferably the former.  ;)

Do we know what other offers were on the table?

I thought I read that he offered Seattle to match and they said no. Sounds to me like he improved his situation over staying in Seattle at a minimum.

Reducing risk might be more appropriate for someone like me who is just trying to build a nest egg big enough to retire before I die. But RS already has that in the bank, probably. Now he may be trying to stretch to make the most he can for other financial goals. His downside may be millions of dollars, but it won't hurt his quality of life much (assuming he's managing his money well).

I'm certain that a full time agent would have been able to extract more guaranteed money and would have been more aggressive in leveraging competing offers. But it's also pretty clear that Sherman had broader objectives. In the last few days he has specifically mentioned:

- oroximity to Silicon Valley for off-field and post-career opportunities.
- desire to play for an up and coming, competitive team.
- two revenge games against Seattle every year.
- high upside (and future salaries locking in contractually) if he reaches reasonable goals in the first year.

Sherman is smarter than the typical NFL player and looking at the big picture. He also has the most information about his medical situation and apparently has more faith than NFL teams in terms of how effectively he will be able to play next year. He seems delighted to be a 49er. He probably could have gotten more guaranteed money from Detroit specifically, but with less upside and less personal happiness.
