Kudos to Coach Paye for keeping Ogden and Shay, and Umeh on the floor throughout at the end. Maybe she didn't have as much choice after Demetre fouled out, but good to not sub out Shay for Bosgana/defense-offense.
9 steals for LSJU. Career game for Clardy, all time high in points, and played 44 minutes yet only 2 turnovers.
The late night team dinner at the hotel will be lively!

Didn't one of those refs look familiar?
Another question, to anyone who has been to a Virginia Tech game. The announcers said it was "loud" and the box score says nearly 5000 fans attended. But the TV shots showed 1/2 to 2/3 of the seats were empty. Is the arena simply a big cavernous place where fans spread out?

I don't know at what point the teams know which refs are assigned to the games, but at least if you walk out onto the court and see a familiar head ref, you might have some sort of idea how they're going to call the game. I guess that's another downside to being in a new conference.

I think the arena is cavernous and seats at least 10k. Shoutout to the maybe 7-8 total Stanford fans at the game. I think don’t think Mary Ashley Stevenson’s parents miss a game. They were behind the bench and it seems make it to every road game. Granted they live on the east coast but nice to see support for our team in visiting arenas.

Traveling today so I haven’t watched the game yet - but that is a bizarre box score. It reinforces the how the hell did they win that game thoughts on this board. Looking forward to watching later.
But
Rebounds -10
Assists -2
Fouls -5
Made FT -6
Turnovers -8 ( so the good direction)
3 pt shooting -18.1% (26.3 to 44.4% though on only 9 VT shots)
Still slightly outshot overall -1.7%
Seriously how is that a winning box score? Not complaining but wow. I guess turnovers must have been the key - Stanford with 9 more shots. But the numbers still don’t really track overall. I would have thought the FT and rebounding deficits would have overwhelmed the turnovers.

This was only Stanford’s 2nd road win of the season so that’s pretty big. Let’s get #3 Sunday.

Not having Agara and having Demetre and Bosgana in foul trouble the whole game eviscerated our rebounding.
The poor free throw shooting would have cost us this game, too, if it were anything like a typical game.
But we had a career night from Clardy--and it almost all came in the 4th quarter. That is pretty much the explanation for the win.

The bottom line is we took 64 shots, and made 28, while Tech took 55 shots, and made 25. So, that 9 shot discrepancy made the difference in the game. A big part of that was the 8 turnover discrepancy. Despite the large rebounding edge for Tech, the offensive rebound edge (ie, second chance points) was only 2. Most of that excess shot wound up going into three point attempts (we took 10 more threes than they did), so even though their percentage was substantially higher, we had one more more made three pointer than they did. And because of that, the made percentage in two pointers was higher (23/45, 51% vs. 21/46, 46%).
All that adds up to us getting 61 points (23 2's and 5 3's) from the floor versus only 54 points (21 2's and 4 3's) for Tech. The foul discrepancy nearly made up for it, as they got 20 points off free throws while we only got 14. That came from a combination of more free throw shots (27 vs. 23) and a higher made percentage (74% vs. 61%) which gave them a 6-point advantage. Thankfully we had a 7 point advantage from the floor.

if it's ok to feel bad for virginia tech, carleigh wenzel played well and had 17 points. but at the last minute, she fumbled an inbounds pass into a turnover under pressure from shay. vt lost a chance to tie or go back ahead. reminded me of the turnover on brooke's last-minute inbounds pass to jzaniah a few games back.
i imagine the vt fans are saying, "that was a foul!" as we said about the contact on jzaniah.
not that i want the outcome to change.

Thanks for the feedback. I can probably handle basketball without too much trouble. But baseball games are long with many breaks to edit out. I’ll do my best.

BTW, my lovely wife has nominated me for “extremely unofficial historian of selected Stanford sports.” I humbly accept her nomination.
