So if I understand this properly, we will play 29-4 Portland at Maples on Thursday. Portland is an excellent team which we have played in recent years a couple of times. It will be a real challenge.
Then, if we win, we will get the winner of Seton Hall/ Quinnipiac also at Maples, on Sunday. Two home games--a real opportunity for us.
If we could win both those games, then we would be in the quarterfinals. If St. Josephs also reaches the quarterfinals then we would play at St. Josephs in Philadelphia on next Thursday, since they are the 2 seed and we are the 3 seed. But if someone knocks them off then we could have a third home game.
All fanciful speculation. We need to worry most about Portland. They scare me based on their record, their coach, and the fact that we needed Brink and Iriafen to beat them. We did beat them 81-51 at Maples a year ago December. Demetre, Bosgana, and Clardy all played a fair bit in that game, so Portland is not an unknown team to us. But they have 3 double digit scorers, all three graduate students.
Portland this year lost to Gonzaga twice and Oregon State twice, but all four losses were tight games. They beat Washington State three times this year. Massey has them at 51 (we are 40), with their best win being over 52 Princeton and their worst loss being the two to 84 Oregon State. So they were favored to beat Oregon State but did not.
