That one play it was clear the ball hit the ground before the receiver had it. The targeting call was absurd. Football is not a static game. Large people running all out in various directions. The Stanford player launched himself to tackle the FSU guy who then ended up in a position where our guy hit their guy in the head. Football is not a static game. While I am strongly against targeting, I think most targeting calls are just the result of two moving object colliding when one is in the wrong position. I think the refs sucked in that game.
Very happy our guys one. Both sides of ball gave it all they had. You cannot knock the effort.

I thought the most egregious thing the refs did was after the long FSU catch on the final drive. There were two seconds left on the game clock.
Yes, the clock stops temporarily after a first down, but the refs had no reason imo to blow the whistle and give FSU time to get set for the next play.

What’s crazy is that Stanford was outgaimed by 150 yards, committed the only turnover, and still won. Although FSU had more penalties, the discrepancy was only 32 yards.

For you sorry dogs who couldn’t enjoy this in person:
As we were waiting for the gate to open so we could storm the field, next to us was Ben Gulbranson’s sister (wearing a #15 jersey). I asked if he’s okay. She said he’s walking, so that’s a good sign.

You pointed out the two stats that just stood out to me. I know as Stanford fans we view games through Cardinal-colored glasses, but if the shoe was on the other foot, and we lost like this to say Notre Dame (or even to this Florida State team for that matter) fans would be trashing the officiating to no end. Nevertheless, a critical win that keeps a *very* thin path to a bowl in play.

The best angle had to be by the down judge/linesman and he clearly saw the runner as being well short, placing the ball at the 1/2 yard line. The ref on the other side of the field also had him short.
Lucky not to have this go into overtime. On the long ball Hail Mary that gave them a final chance, they could have done anything other than let him catch the ball and we win easily. If you can't knock the ball down, then just grab the receiver and get a pass interference penalty which would have only been a 15 yard penalty instead of a 53 yard gain. And they don't put time back on the clock for that.
So to then commit pass interference on the next play was maddening (WHY NOT DO THAT ON THE LAST PLAY?!) -- how do you use your hands and grab the entire play and never once look at where the ball might be?

with all the injuries that we suffered, i think we did well to hang on and win. the Noles had all the momentum after that long pass and the penalty.
i'm proud of our lads tonight.

Stanford and next opponent Miami are tied for 8th in the ACC, bottom rung of the top half of the standings.

Part of the difference is that FSU was 1/3 on fourth down conversions, and drove 79 yards on the last drive when they needed 81. The type of penalty hurt more than the yardage. For example, the offside on Kenney’s missed field goal wound up giving Stanford 7 points.
That being said, usually when there is a discrepancy that big on yards, you look to turnovers to make the difference, but they didn’t (and favored FSU), or maybe one team dominated with a score or consistently pinning the other team back, but that didn’t really happen either.
I look forward to Matt’s breakdown tomorrow. He’s got to be over the moon.

So on standings, ACC has 2 of 17 teams with SIX wins already bowl eligible (GTEC, VIRG )
And another FIVE with 5 wins that likely qualify. .
SEC of 16 teams, TEN were ranked going into this weekend, and 7 are bowl eligible now.
At least three more will qualify.

I wish more people were in the stands to watch the team go 3-0 at home, but those that have attended these 3 games have seen amazing wins.
The guys are doing just enough to win the home games. These wins are so important for the players that elected to stay, the players that elected to transfer in, future recruiting, appeal to a future coach, and so much more. This was clearly going to be a very challenging year for the program, so to get 3 wins at home has been such a treat.
I suspect some of our ACC opponents are just not used to travelling far for road games, so they might not be at their best at Stanford Stadium. I can hope that trend will continue for the Pittsburgh game, but fear it won't be applicable for Notre Dame or Cal. :(

It’s Reunion weekend so I actually got to see a game in person. I had to move to get away from the FSU fans and right before kickoff about 15-20 of them surrounded me. One guy had the typical foghorn voice and spent the whole game yelling at the refs. And he missed the best part, leaving at the 5:00 mark when it seemed like we had it locked up. He actually made me miss $C fans.
Honestly I didn’t think either team deserved to win, but hey, thank you refs.
As bad as he might be at times, I’m not going to criticize Gulbranson anymore, now that I’ve seen Brown in action. And he might be more mobile than BG, but wow he’s pretty darn slow afoot himself.
I was surprised we didn’t think to put a spy on their QB #1 — he was way more of a threat than their running backs.
Their long punt return in the 2H almost cost us the game, ugh. I was wondering if Flintoff was trying to pooch it to open space. Whatever, we had no one on that half of the field.
Watching our secondary try to cover fast receivers is pretty scary.
