Earlier this week ESPN Classic ran the Arizona at Stanford game from 1989. (Some might remember that was the game played during the first week of January when the students, including me, still weren't back from break. Montgomery was furious about the scheduling and made a plea to the students who would be out of town to give their passes to those who would be around.) Lichti went for a career high 35 points (guarded much of the time by Kenny Lofton, by the way) and he was matched by Arizona's Sean Elliot. I loved that team: Lichti, Terry Taylor, Andrew Vlahov, Howard Wright, Eric Reveno, plus bench players Brian McSweeney, Derek Bruton, Scott Meinart, and a freshman named Adam Keefe.
It was a great trip down memory lane, but the sad part was obvious. Stanford-Arizona used to be a day I marked on my calendar every year, it used to be the biggest game on the west coast. What, in god's name, has happened?
Please clear the field! The game is not over!
