I think this will be a good thing. Split the stadium in half -- kind of like they've always done for Texas vs. Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl -- and you've got have the stadium in Cardinal Red and the other half in blue. As for the uniforms, I don't think the NCAA likes to have both teams wearing home unis. UCLA and Southern Cal always used to do that, but when they returned to that tradition several years ago, they were notified that the visiting team would be assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the opening kickoff. The home team simply declined the penalty, and they were off and running.

As for the schedule benefits, all you need do is look at the snoozefest that was last season's home slate. After Southern Cal, it was a whole lot of nothing. It'll be nice to have either ND or C.al at the end of each season.

I don't like the proposal to play the Big Game in Santa Clara. I think college football belongs on a college campus, in a college town. To me, being on campus is one of the really fun things about college football. If I wanted to attend a game in an NFL stadium next to an amusement park, I'd buy a 49ers ticket. There are reasonable voices on Ca.l fan boards, just not a lot of them.  Here's an 11 page thread on Bear Insider detailing how our rivals really, really hate this.  A writer's hate is cubed if they believe the move in any way helps Stanford.  The first few pages are somewhat reasonable but once the trope that this helps Stanford forms it gets ugly quickly.

I laugh at the notion that UC didn't fill their seat allotment at LSJU because it wasn't that long ago when UC occupied more seats at old Stanford Stadium than the home standing Cardinal.  Heck, one year, UC had more fans there than the entire capacity of the new Stanford Stadium.

College football is cyclical.  UC was up, Stanford was down; now it is the opposite ; in the not too distant future it will reverse; then it will reverse again, etc. etc. etc. 

The novelty of the game in Santa Clara will ensure that both sides will sell their entire allotment.

As some posters here have said in the past, just the volume of UC grads v. LSJU grads who live in this area gives UC a distinct advantage when it comes to selling seats.

Lastly, an aside to Lefty...  Never assume that BI's public site represents the thinking of rationale UC fans.  That site attracts the fringe element and they are, as a whole, clueless when it comes to UC sports.  In fact, there has been a much better and far more logical discussion on the private site.  I would suggest that there is a 70-30 split IN FAVOR of playing the game in Santa Clara.

I agree with that general sentiment too, although there are some schools (UCLA and San Diego State are two that jump to mind) that seem to function fine without it. I don't think an occasional exception to the rule needs to cause a brobdingnagian amount of hand wringing and angst, though.

If the game was in 2019, I would agree that you never know.  However, this game is scheduled for 2014.  I suspect that the reversal you hope will occur in the not too distant future is not quite that close.  More importantly crowd support tends to lag the field performance, so in terms of optimal Stanford crowd support the timing is really ideal, from a Stanford point of view.

71Bear, surely the worm will turn.  The difference is now it's proven that Stanford can compete at the highest level because of, not in spite of, our higher academic standards.  We might hit a bump if/when Shaw leaves, but his successors can no longer say winning is impossible here.  Given that Shaw's here a while, the prospects for the worm turning in your lifetime are not good.  And if/when he does leave, one of the catalysts would be Shaw winning the whole thing.  That surely will eat every Bear alive for the rest of their lives.
