If you want tough try Gleneagles in McLaren Park. Alister McKenzie nine holer with alternate tees on each hole to make an interesting 18. It's a bastard. Then there is the perfect par 27 nine in Golden Gate Park run by the First Tee. None of the Country Club BS and attitude.

And fee reasonable.

I played Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo a lot growing up, love that course.  MacKenzie had a house right about where a hooked tee shot on #5 would land.  My dad lives about two blocks from that house. #16 is a dogleg with the approach shot necessitating carry over a canyon, to a tight three-tier green.  I'd heard that at one time it was Tom Watson's favorite hole in golf.

My favorite is probably the "poor man's Pebble," Pacific Grove Municipal G.C.  The front nine is like any other muni, much of the back nine is along the Pacific Ocean and the rough is ice plant.  The back nine is billed as a links-style course, which it is, sort of, if you squint your eyes a bit.  Stunning, when the ice plant is in bloom (most of summer and fall).  Mrs. Mick and I were playing there once, very foggy day, very few people out.  One of those still, quiet days where you could hear the ocean waves crash and individual birds.  We were on the #12 Rocky Shores, both about to putt.  I said "Babe, this place is great, it's just like a private course."  Just then, a ball came whizzing between us, and from out of the mist, four drunk players with their shirts off and backwards baseball caps emerged, looking a little sheepish, saying "Sorry, man, didn't see you."

Snap back to reality. Now I remember.  Public course. And you can play it for $71 or $53 twilight.

Torrey pines is reportedly not bad for a public course (I don’t play; I’m going by my son’s report).  The Palo Alto public course was redone a few years ago into a links style course that was also well-received.

Yeah, I don’t have any real reason for Koepka. He just rubs me wrong.  Great thing about sports is you don’t have to have any real reasons to like or not like a player or team! 

Funny what you said on the tour question. I take it Reed was not eligible cause he’d run away with the prize. (I think they did something similar about cheating and NCAA hoops coaches - excepting Calipari, cause, well you know why!)  I also thought that Bubba Watson is quite unpopular. I think I once read where they did a poll asking for who would be the person they’d be least likely to help if that player was stranded on a desert island )or something like that) - Bubba “won”

Didn't know that about Bubba in the 2015 poll.  I saw the Feherty interviews with all three.  PReed has a rep as a cheater dating back to his college days, has a troubled home life, brash, alienates people.  Starts sentences with "I'm from Texas, so...", curses on TV, snaps at fans, clearly considered himself a "legend of the game" after he won three tournaments before age 24. Only saving grace is a 7-4-1 Ryder Cup record, which most of his peers can't match.

Keopka comes across as a jerk, flat out.

Technically speaking, the five slowest golfers are (1) J. B. Holmes, (2) DeChambeau, (3) Ben Crane, (4) Jason Day and (5) Jordan Speith.

Mick -- 79 seconds is mere child's play.  DeChamSlow went 2:37 on a birdie putt at East Lake last year.  it was one of several occasions where he has gone 2 minutes plus on his first putt.  rudely self-indulgent seems an apt descriptor.
