IMO Michigan is a significantly better team this year than they were last year. Arguably this year's defense is not quite as good as last year's. Similarly, I think this years run game is a bit bitter than last year's. The big difference is the ability of the QB. Cade McNamara had a lot of good qualities but he didn't have a big arm and the ability to "make all the throws". JJ McCarthy can, and that is critical. You really don't know how Michigan is going to attack you on any given play. McCarthy can also bring you back if you get behind, so you can just play your game and not panic if things aren't going well all the time. Michigan has a much better shot at actually winning the playoff this year than last.
That said, OSU almost lost to Northwestern and really hasn't looked good this year. This was a year Michigan "should" win. We will know more soon, assuming nothing crazy happens in the B1G Playoff.
