Torri Huske wins gold in the mixed 4x100m medley relay!!!
AND a World Record.
Regan Smith also gets a gold medal for that relay as she swam on it for the prelims. (Oh, wow, Abbey Weitzel also was on it! So she comes away with a Silver (400 FR prelims) and Gold.)
Huske will probably anchor the women's 400 medley relay as well. Regan Smith will be on that relay. (Smith, King, Walsh, Huske) It looks like a good chance for a gold there. (Woofing gods, please note I am using times from this meet: US up 1.7 seconds over Australia on the breaststroke leg, so should beat Australia by a second. US up 2.2 seconds on China on the backstroke leg, so should beat China by 2 seconds.)
One of the discouraging things to this old-timer is how most of the swimmers look hardly winded after their races.
But Huske looked appropriately exhausted. The China swimmer might have had her in another 5 meters.
Huske had a noticeably slow start on her leg. I saw no reason for it due to the finish of the previous swimmer. My guess is the team & she under-estimated China and thought that a safe start was more important than a good start. (Huske had beaten the China swimmer by 0.5 in the individual event.)
The splits were Murphy 52.08 (0.31 better than his 3rd pl in 100m back; would have gotten 2nd), Fink 58.29 (0.76 better than his T2 in 100 breast), Walsh 55.18 (0.35 better than 2nd in 100m breast), Huske 51.88 (0.41 better than 2nd in 100m free)
China certainly did better than Rowdy thought. The US individually beat China except in the breaststroke leg. Qin went 57.82, an amazing 1.68 seconds better than in the individual event (59.50 but 58.93 in semis; 58.51 in the men's relay prelims; lifetime best is 57.69). The winning time in the individual event was a 59.03. Rowdy said Qin underperformed in the meet but not in the relay. Perhaps he was sick & got better. Yang's freestyle split was 0.96 better then in the individual event.
If Fink had swum that fast in the 100 Breast event, he would have won by a quarter second. But if Qin had swum that fast in the individual event, he would have won by about 0.75.
