Also, I think we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Geno Auriema became the winningest head coach in NCAA basketball, pulling ahead of Tara Vanderveer.

feels like Hannah Hidalgo doing to USC what Juju did to Stanford? Out of country so cannot watch - instead hearing the USC radio (complaining about missed foul calls) along w ESPN play-by-play. And despite/because I always cheered for the Pac-12, guess I now can proceed to cheer for South Carolina tomorrow vs. UCLA. Have to laugh at WNBA Mock Draft which has Betts leaving after her junior year to play for Valkyries...

And everyone who has followed Tara's career knows that is she hadn't taken the 1996-96 season off to coach the US Olympic team, she'd have 30 or so more wins (the team that she turned over to Amy Tucker temporarily was 29-3 that year, went to the final 4). Geno has never taken a season off, and he's also been credited with wins when he was out for several games in a row while ill.

USC seemed like it had no offensive plan. Just a bunch of players taking turns going 1-1. Still a good defensive team because Marshall and Iriafen are both good post defenders.

I think you can quibble with this point if Geno retires tomorrow, but it looks like he won't be retiring any time soon. Even if he coaches just for this season and next, the 50-odd wins that he will accumulate will push him way beyond these issues. Plus I don't think the first point should even be held against him; it was Tara's decision to take leave and coach the Olympic team so why should Geno be penalized for that?

Agreed, they were very sloppy and even when they had the opportunity to set up their half court offense, it wasn't cohesive and it was just players trying to create something on their own and often times forcing ill-advised shots.
They have multiple weapons and anyone of their Big 3 (JuJu, Kiki or TVO) should draw a double team, leaving someone else open, which they did not look for.

I agree with above posts that we should acknowledge Geno's basketball accomplishments. He likely will wind up with more wins than Tara, even allowing for Tara's season off and Geno's credit for games he didn't really coach.
But there is more to basketball than accumulated wins. There is the influence on the game, the role modeling for female players and coaches, and the general collegiality and humanity of the coach (much as those qualities are disparaged in our culture.) And in those ways, Tara is truly nonpareil.
I also have a strong hunch that Tara created a legacy at Stanford that will live long past her, but that Geno's legacy at UConn will quickly dissipate after he retires. Part of that has to do with the kinds of universities they coach(ed) at.
But there is more to basketball than accumulated wins. There is the influence on the game, the role modeling for female players and coaches, and the general collegiality and humanity of the coach (much as those qualities are disparaged in our culture.) And in those ways, Tara is truly nonpareil.

A big factor should be the conference opponents each faced. Stanford usually had at least 3 or 4 other good teams in the conference while Yukon sometimes faced one or two decent conference opponents.
