 The average team with players with similar recruiting rankings should probably be a borderline top-25 team, and we are a bit away from there.

Seems like in assessing a team there is more to consider than raw rankings of the players, such as years of experience playing in college, and especially experienced players at important positions like, in our case, at point guard (no Lepolo, in a point guard heavy conference) and the post (only Agara). IMHO those holes are enough to explain the perceived discrepancy between expectations based on rankings and record.
