Going forward Lex you're not winning with retreads like Wood, Cobb and Junis. They need young arms like the Dodgers have in bushels. And if you lose Rodon you're in deep shit.

Right now, we're fifth in MLB in runs per game, but 16th in runs against per game. Maybe we don't need Soto so much as we need better pitching.

How are you going to fill the needs at third base, first base, two outfielders who can catch the ball, a true closer and probably at shortstop if you move brobdingnagian piles of cash around to one player? Or are you going to trade your best prospects for a guy who will give you 2.4 seasons and then probably move on?
If you are going to spend big why not wait until you don't have to bankrupt the farm system. I can't see the Giants, for all their passion, challenging a Dodgers team that is literally better at every position and with some bench players better than anything you have starting?

It's like cognitive dissonance for many Giants fans at this time. They bitch about how the team is making mistakes and how the players aren't good enough, yet hang on to this idea "anything can happen" down the stretch, talking nonsense like trading for Juan Soto.
I was confident enough to go on record June 8th to say the Giants should be sellers aiming to boost the farm system as the trade window is open. Noting has happened on the field since to suggest they are somehow contenders that should be giving up any future potential asset to barely improve, and maybe even fall behind teams that are already better and will get even better in the next 9 days.
Here is a pretty important data point. Sacramento is .5 games out of last place, and the worst record in the PCL. OKC, the Dodgers? They have the best record in the PCL.
The Giants are 15 GB of the Dodgers and Sac is 14 GB of OKC. The Giants clearly have a two level talent disparity to the Dodgers. Their Double A teams finished about equal, both winning their first halves of Eastern and Texas leagues. Their High A teams both won their first halves too. They both finished 2nd in the first half of California League in Low A.
So you might say the Giants have caught the Dodgers at the A and AA level, but are way behind at the AAA and MLB level. It makes zero sense to trade any of the prospects just when you've caught up at the lower levels, and makes all kinds of sense to add more talent to the lower levels.
The Dodgers will beat both the Giants' best pitchers, but so too will the Mets and Braves, so what, exactly is the point of keeping the one who is about to be a free agent? I can't believe that I agree with OF. Keep your guys. But Sellers? Webb and Rodon are the only ones with great value and Webb is going nowhere. Maybe somebody will be a sucker and want Slater.
I've been watching River Cats games on Channel 44. Only two guys stand out, Diaz and Johnson. Diaz has a sweet swing and can catch the ball. Johnson has speed and knows how to run the bases and has good range in the outfield.
Vaun Brown tore up Low A. Now he's tearing up High A. No idea what kind of a defensive player he is. 24 years old so perhaps needs to be fast tracked. #10 pick after the Giants drafted nine pitchers in either '19 or '20.

Pederson easily catches that ball. Mercedes isn’t an outfielder. Which he showed. Why Wynn? Just because he’s a righty and they are facing Kershaw. He’s not a threat. He’s not a good hitter. Just a poor managerial decision. Managing by computer only takes you so far.

Totally agree, Lex. Mercedes is interesting offensively but a MLB outfielder he isn't...at least yet. Wynns is ok for a spot start at catcher but a mlb threat he is not. Pederson has actual cred and, if nothing else, creates pitching changes. He's not getting enuf chances at the plate to keep sharp.

How would you re-arrange who is sitting in what deck chairs? This is like complaining about the play calling when your team has the worst roster in the NFL. Admittedly, the Giants are not a 100-loss team, but they are not a contender either and shouldn't be judged as if they are.
On a related note, if there is one thing this season is demonstrating it is the folly of expanding the Wild Card from 2 teams to 3. There simply are not 3 teams worthy of Wild Card opportunity in either league. If they didn't expand the WC, the Giants would be 5 GB of the Padres for the #2 spot, and everyone would know they are selling. Instead, they are 2 GB for the #3 WC spot, and likely fooling themselves they are a marginal player or two away from nabbing the #3 WC spot, in denial they are too flawed to pose any playoff threat should they miraculously earn the #6 seed.

On a related note, if there is one thing this season is demonstrating it is the folly of expanding the Wild Card from 2 teams to 3. There simply are not 3 teams worthy of Wild Card opportunity in either league. If they didn't expand the WC, the Giants would be 5 GB of the Padres for the #2 spot, and everyone would know they are selling. Instead, they are 2 GB for the #3 WC spot, and likely fooling themselves they are a marginal player or two away from nabbing the #3 WC spot, in denial they are too flawed to pose any playoff threat should they miraculously earn the #6 seed.
Actually this shows MLB’s wisdom in expanding. More teams in race means more interest in more cities come September.
All of the teams competing for WC are flawed. Giants probably more so. But they can help themselves with incremental pickups - a left handed reliever and perhaps a MIF or outfielder that can add some defense/ athleticism.
Part of the defensive issue is speed (lack thereof) showing lack of range. Part is playing people out of position. Sometimes out of necessity. Mercedes is an obvious example. He’d played OF once ot twice pre-SF. Kapler should only be using him as DH and perhaps 1B as he has played there some. Pederson is limited defensively, as he’s slow. But he at least takes decent routes and is an actual OF.
Kapler gives lip service to defense. But when you plug a guy like Mercedes in left so you can get Austin Wynns’ “bat” into the game, you show your true colors. Were I a pitcher I wouldn’t be too happy about it.
Finally, were Giants to sneak in Webb and Rodon at top of rotation could pose trouble. Stuff happens in playoffs. Get in and take your chances. Giants were lowest rated team in ‘14 playoffs. In either league. That one worked out pretty well….

Agree. Giants get swept by the evil machine and still are only a game out of 6th.
Today is on Kapler. He plays lip service to defense, but doesn’t truly value. Platoons. Puts Mercedes in left, DH Wynn. If he puts Pederson in left and Mercedes DH, maybe they don’t lose. Pederson easily catches that ball. Mercedes isn’t an outfielder. Which he showed. Why Wynn? Just because he’s a righty and they are facing Kershaw. He’s not a threat. He’s not a good hitter. Just a poor managerial decision. Managing by computer only takes you so far.
Defense is KILLING this team. Yet, Mercedes in left……
How would you re-arrange who is sitting in what deck chairs? This is like complaining about the play calling when your team has the worst roster in the NFL. Admittedly, the Giants are not a 100-loss team, but they are not a contender either and shouldn't be judged as if they are.
