WBB: Stanford 66 -- Louisville 84

Until the final minute, 3 assists to 22 turnovers. We are not making the NCAA tourney this year Mark my words now. Coach Paye is in over her head.

Tough game down two starters, against a very talented team.
I can't remember if Tara ever played 3 freshmen as much as we've seen this season (out of necessity!) from Swain, Eschmeyer, Somfai? And which of LSJU's 7 losses so far would've been Ws under coach Tara?

Not a hard game to analyze - Louisville was simply much better
- I am not a Lepolo fan, but when she is out the guard rotation/depth collapses.
- still no identity on offense - most of it today was driving at the rim on UL overplays. Unfortunately that isn’t a team strength. It also is why the assist numbers were insanely low.
- I don’t remember a single back door basket, which is a big point to the Princeton. And that isn’t a new issue this year.
- Shay, Clardy and Ogden were decent while the rest of the team struggled. Frosh are not up to this pace yet - Somfai and Eschmeyer with only 3 points each and Swain with 6 turnovers.
- I like that Ogden shot much more today vs. the last few games.
- minus 5 in offensive rebounds.
- I really didn’t think the officials were a big issue today - you could say that they allowed a lot of handsiness which helped Louisville I guess, but it was consistent both ways and across quarters which is much, much better vs. most of our home games. The q3 Eschmeyer charge was terrible though. But we weren’t winning this with some other officials, and fouls even finished 14-12 in our favor.

Agree. I don’t think we would have won even with Agara and Lepolo, so I don’t think we can point to their injuries as an excuse, but I do think it would have been more competitive.

It was much closer at Louisville without Nunu. It would not have made a difference with Nunu and Talana, but I’m so over the unfair called games. It’s been like this every game against Stanford in the ACC. It may not make a difference in the outcome, but it’s just disgusting at this point. Stanford has never been much of a fouling team, and never the aggressive team, but it feels like it’s always 8 vs 5. And I’ve watched a lot of basketball. Since 1997.. I actually miss Tiffany Bird because she was bad, but never so 1 sided

This was disappointing on our home court. What I don't understand is the lack of aggressiveness? Our bigs do not go after the ball with urgency and too often Louisville's bigs just took it away or beat us to the ball. I did see some spark and hustle from Ogden and I liked that she was driving to the hoop. Overall, It seemed to be the Stanford girl's playing against the Louisville's women's team. That said, I know they are young and we have injuries, I just wish there was more fight in this team. I've seen this before with Brink and others. As was pointed out, we are just not an aggressive program. Would love to see that start to evolve under Kate's leadership, as she was tough and gritty when she played.

Uh, why isn’t anyone commenting on how the Stanford overmatched and undermanned team held the second half even against the #6 team.
I thought Stanford did a really good job through much of the 3rd quarter in being more aggressive and having better defense. An 18 point deficit became a 10 point deficit until a late run by the #6 team. Even in the 4th, Stanford forced the other team to call a timeout and change their tactics to be even more grabby
And, late in the game when there was no prayer, the Stanford players gave it their all, although it was against players that matched them more equally in experience and skill.
I have to admit that at the beginning of the year, I was not very hopeful that Ijiwoye would be that useful. But I was wrong. She really fights out there. I saw her boxing out much larger bigs and pushing them backwards. She sneaks in for rebounds and hustles back when her player gets free. She doesn’t ball hog like some of the other players. She still makes mistakes, but she is clearly a positive factor for the team.

Because that wouldn't fit the occasional narrative here that LSJU WBB players and coaches are underperforming and underachieving??

Or maybe because it was pretty clear that, if Louisville hadn’t done a 3d string line change substitution with about 2 minutes to go, the margin of victory probably would have been 10+ more than it was.
It was great that our team kept fighting to the end. I hope they START with that much energy against ND. They’re going to need it, because I’m sure ND will do everything they can to avoid going 0-2 on this road trip.

This doesn’t explain that Stanford “won” the 3rd quarter 16-15. That being said, there’s a reason that the game is 40 minutes, an we have won games easily where the opponent held its own or even beat us for a stretch. Yeah, after being down 18 at the half, it could have gone even more sideways than it did, and I’m glad we played better. But I wouldn’t read too much into it; over the course of 40 minutes, Louisville beat us handily.

Care to check the play-by-play and validate your "10+ more" assertion? I await your calculation.

Take 10+ more as you will, but it was 79-53 with 2:29 left when UL called timeout to get the scrubs in. Stanford picked up +8 over that last short stretch to make it a little bit respectable.
It’s nice the team kept playing and the third quarter was better, but doing it in a close game is much different from doing it for 1 quarter while down by a high teens score.
Without Agara, they just don’t have the talent and depth to do much more. Cut the turnovers in half tonight and we still lose by 10+.
