Yeah but I didn't know until one of my nominations actually resulted in a statue. I was dealing with lab chemicals, contact printing, optical effects, exposure meters, multiple film stocks, surly color timers, crappy release prints and the Hollywood IATSE who treated Bay Area members like they were farm animals. In the late 70's we were confronted with tubes but while I could do things in the field like repair a shutter damaged by a careless assistant or power an Eclair NPR with a car battery I knew nothing about image orthicon. So I used a tech to align the tubes in my Ikegami and gave up maintenance to the factory and my soul to "video."
My few DP friends of the 60's still alive and me laugh about how easy it is to operate a digital camera today. The upside is that the operator can focus on the story (dramatic or documentary) by making use of menus. The downside is that the craft was once tactile and simply touching film was magical.
The Obie Awards are for Off Broadway productions.
However the word obie is used in another context in the motion picture business. What is an obie and who was it named after?
Hint: the obie has seen a renaissance because of the use of Zoom during the pandemic.
