He was a right fielder with a cannon for an arm, he participated in 61 double plays (16th all time for outfielders) and had 283 assists (still 12th all time for outfielders). He had some good speed...he was the first player with 20 HRs and 20 SBs in a season. He hit a home run in his first plate appearance off of Hall of Famer Tim Keefe.  He was a carpenter in Indiana and didn't play pro baseball until he was 24.

All of Ward's pitching occurred when overhand and sidearm pitching was not allowed.  In fact, that's why they're called "pitchers", because during the first 10 years of MLB, they "pitched" the ball underhand, like pitching horseshoes.  Until 1884, there was nothing very unique about pitchers in the field. Ward STOPPED pitching when they changed the rule.
