Excluding the pandemic 2020 season, six teams made the playoffs with a negative run differential.  Who were they?  Which team has the record for worst run differential to make the playoffs?

2005 Padres (-42 run differential)
1997 Giants (-9 run differential)
1987 Twins (-20 run differential)
1984 Royals (-13 run differential)
1981 Royals (-8 run differential)

The 1987 Twins have the distinction of being the only World Series champions to have had a negative regular season run differential.
The 1997 Giants and 2007 Diamondbacks had the best regular season record for a team with a negative run differential, 90-72.
And the 2005 Padres hold the distinction of being the playoff team with the worst run differential.

In the Pandemic shortened 2020 season, three additional teams made it to the playoffs with a negative run differential.

I think Long had a similar streak when he was playing for the Hollywood Stars. The Stars were the best team in the PCL back when Bobbbbbbb and I were slugging each other in the Seals Stadium bleachers (I was big for my age and Bobbbb tried to kick me in the shins). The Stars were managed by Bobby Bragsn who actually spent some time in the state mental hospital in Atascadero. He was Leo Durocher on steroids.

The Seals never could beat the Stars.
