I could see maybe a couple of games played at the beginning of the year as people try to force a season to happen. But when teams have to quarantine for 14 days and miss out on two games it's going to become apparent that it is a futile effort. Maybe they'll declare the team that won both of their games the league champ over the one who went 3-1 based on win percentage.

I just looked at the schedule, and it is clear that it will be hard to impossible to be able to get all the games in if there are team quarantines. I looked at Illinois' schedule (granted, no chance of actually winning their Division, normally) and if they miss their first two games they cannot play all of their games. Their scheduled bye weeks don't match up with others. Also, a late season quarantine would destroy any hopes of getting in all the games even if it were theoretically possible to make a season happen. They should just move the Conference championship back to mid-December if they want to have a prayer of getting a full season in with makeup games. Or they need to figure out a way to determine Division champs with numerous missed games. Do they go by winning percentage knowing that not all teams will play the same number of games? Imagine a clearly superior Ohio State team losing out to a Penn State team for the Division because Ohio State had an aggressive approach to playing games leaving them with a 7-1 record (losing to Michigan but Michigan failed to show up for their games against Minnesota and Michigan State) while Penn State only plays 4 games but wins them all (Northwestern, Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland). Penn State all of a sudden conveniently has an outbreak before their game against Ohio State. Does PSU go on to play .... Nebraska in the conference championship game? 

They should just pull the plug.

But, of course, the existence of these schedules will be impacting others.  What about vendors ordering hot dogs on the basis of the schedule?  What about the players & coaches & staff that will have to go through the exposures at practices?   What about employees expecting to work based on the schedules, rather than finding some other job that has a better chance of happening.

Some of the discussions here center about conference champions & such.    I think the schools (& NCAA) should ask themselves, what is the purpose of the proposed games?   Is it TV money?  Is it "because the athletes have worked toward this for years"?  Is it so the coaches get paid?  Is it for "bragging rights"?  Is it so the 2020 (conference) championship slot will have a team's name by it?  Is it because the schools want to tell their football fans (and donors) that "We tried."

Now, for their goals, how many games need to be played?  How much risk is put on the players, coaches, staff, and other employees (the guy hawking hot dogs in the stands, etc.) to achieve that?

If I were in charge, I'd certainly be discussing football season potentially happening in the spring.  That is, if it actually happening was part of my goals.

I am most impressed by NFL players opting out, well, except for those who are set financially (akin to Buster).  The players have a very limited window in which to make $$.  Moreover, the physical safety risk to them is low; and assuming they are not living with an elderly parent/grandparent, the risk to heir household is low, too.

I also wonder if the medical attention they get outside of football is as good as inside of football (have to believe that players - and their families? - get pretty good medical attention inside the program).  Bottom line:  I hope from a safety standpoint, they are evaluating their competing scenarios properly.  But they should know best, and they are the ones who should make the decision, so good for them.

BTW, do you think any of those "holding out" in NFL are unhappy with their contractual situation?  As I've stated numerous times here and elsewhere, the NFL rookie contract restrictions are ridiculous and ==> a lot of unhappy, underpaid players.  Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Most will probably be fine. But some will not. How many people get it will dictate how many end up with problems. And of course these folks play a game with well known concussion risks. So I'm sure the number skipping for health reasons will be low in any case.

I don't think this is quite correct. Yes, they are much less likely to die of the disease (though our ICU has seen several patients in their 20s and 30s). But we know even asymptomatic survivors have notable heart inflammation whose long term significance is unknown, and plenty of patients have prolonged fatigue and shortness of breath.

For a professional athlete who relies on their physical health, these are important considerations. Sacrifice one year while a vaccine is developed, versus potentially losing your entire career if you have a bad case and develop cardiomyopathy or lose lung capacity.

I suspect this would be relatively uncommon for pro athletes, but if 60% of players got it, it would certainly affect some of their careers.

“Much less likely to die” is a massive understatement, don’t you think?  I mean there has been 1 person in Ca under 18 that has died from Covid. And he had undisclosed health issues.  Tragic, no question. But not significant from a public health standpoint. Also, im  curious, how many instances of “notable heart inflammation” of 20 somethings have you seen?
